AXA Financial To Sponsor Declaration Of Independence Road Trip

New York, N.Y. — AXA Financial, Inc., is proud to announce its sponsorship of the Declaration of Independence (DOI) Road Trip, a non-profit, nonpartisan project that is taking a rare, original copy of the Declaration on a cross-country tour. Producer Norman Lear acquired one of 25 remaining Dunlap broadsides printed on July 4, 1776, in June 2000 with the goal of bringing the "People’s Document" directly to Americans -- especially young people – to inspire them to participate in civic activism, to exercise their rights, and above all, to vote. The Declaration of Independence Road Trip was officially launched in Washington, D.C. on July 3, 2001 and will continue across the United States through Election Day 2004.

AXA Financial joins the proud sponsor The Home Depot and The United States Postal Service, the "Official Carrier" of the DOI Road Trip. Additional funding is from The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Annenberg Foundation and the Lear Family Foundation.

This copy of the Declaration, printed on July 4, 1776, is the only one of 25 remaining Dunlap broadsides traveling the country. Featuring historical and contemporary photographs, video and music, the Declaration exhibit illustrates the cherished values and ideals embodied in the revered document that laid the foundation for personal freedoms and individual rights. The exhibit also highlights social and political movements that helped shape the United States and continue to influence countries around the world.

The multimedia exhibition features an entertaining and educational video that explains the history of the Declaration and its relevance to contemporary America, and is hosted by Reese Witherspoon, a descendant of one of the signers of the document.

The exhibition also includes viewings of an extraordinary 14-minute film, produced by Norman Lear and Rob Reiner at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, in which a distinguished group of actors, including Mel Gibson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Spacey and Renee Zellweger, among others, perform a powerful theatrical presentation of the document.

The exhibition concludes with a modern-day "Liberty Pole," a central gathering place where opinion cards are placed to invite such individual expressions on various topics as equality, freedom and happiness. These cards also serve as post cards that will be sent to participants in 2004 to remind them of their pledge to civic involvement.
